Shadows on Queen Street, Toronto

16x20 Oil on Canvas
I haven't been doing many larger paintings, and I decided that its time to get back to it. I feel that my value studies and smaller studies have helped enough so that I feel comfortable getting back to larger canvases. I had done a loose value study of a similar scene (see post Nov. 14) and wanted to do one with a bit more color and detail.

This is stunning Catherine. It has a great graphic quality that captured my attention first and then I am hit with the lights and shadows. One of your best I think.

I just love the way you handled this. So much atmosphere and the right amount of color.

You understand all the elements of painting so well, Catherine. To me it is like a summary of what I should consider when I paint but always forget. The balance, focal point, tonal values and contrast, movement...it is all there. The one figure and two cars form an excellent counterpoint to the cluster of figures to the right!

I love the light in this piece Catherine and how the light glances off the heads of the figures and the wires, great job!

Photographers are often told "don't ever shoot into the light. Put the light behind you or off to the side." Often good advice, but not always. This lovely painting shows why, with its graphic qualities and the intensity one can get only by looking into the light. A real beauty!
