Spadina and College Rain, Toronto

6x6 oil on board
Spadina is a street full of eclectic stores, wonderful colors, lots of activity, and home to Toronto's Chinatown. This view features the corner of College and Spadina during a downpour in the fall. I am continuing to experiment with color palettes and in this picture I used Viridian, Ivory Black and white for the main background and added cadmium red, yellow ochre, and cadmium yellow as highlights.

After my show in July of this year, I chose to devote my time to family responsibilites and my art was set aside. It was an all encompassing path which didn't allow time to pick up a brush along the way, but it was a path that I needed and wanted to take. My beautiful wonderful mother passed away Nov. 20 after a difficult illness. I will cherish every moment I spent with her.

Catherine I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Someone told me that a Mother grounds you and I think it’s so—and a mother loves the whole of us-unconditionally-so it's hard I know. I am so sorry that you had to endure her illness, but you being there for her then will help get you through now-and so will your family, friends -and painting.

My favourite part of this painting is the movement-

I am so sorry about your mother Catherine. Your painting is lovely. The colour palette creates a vivid feeling of rain. It feels very wet.
Wonderful. The photo of our mother is beautiful. My thoughts are with you.

Dear Catherine,
Very sorry to know about your loss. I offer my condolences.
Now...to cheer you up, this is an excellent painting! The palette, the strokes are just lovely...especially the reflection of the tail lights...very abstract :)
I've not seen your post since a long time so felt really nice when I saw this now :)

Sorry for your loss Catherine.

I was elated to see you post today in my blogger stream, welcome back. I met you for the first time at the Toronto Art Ex. and really enjoyed talking and viewing your work, 1 of my favorites from the show.

I lost my mother ten years ago and I still think about her every day. She is always with me, as I am sure yours is with you. This seems to be true no matter what your spiritual beliefs may be. My mother was an atheist who rejected all thought of an afterlife but she lives on in me and my sisters and our children.
Your painting is great, as usual. You capture the atmosphere of the neighborhood so well, I can almost smell it.
I too have had some life-changing events to deal with recently (though not as devastating as yours) and have neglected my painting but hope soon to give it my full attention.
Keep well.

Love what you said about the importance of grays...so true. Ult.blue and TRO might be my favorite combo for grays. I'm experimenting with taupe, another neutral with a million variations. Fun! Love your street scenes, and so sorry to hear about your mom.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my sister after a long fight with pancreatic cancer on Nov 22. I still love that I got to spend time with her. It was very precious to me. It was many months before I picked up a brush again.
