Snow Bank, James Street South, Hamilton

11x14 Oil on Canvas
On Saturday, when I started this painting, it was brilliant sunshine outside and minus 14 Celsius (about 6 Fahrenheit) I liked the abstract quality of the snow bank and the buildings in light and shadow, but as I painted, I realized there were too many other things going on. I simplified it as much as possible, and I think I am happy with it now.

How nice! I like how your snow emulates the surrounding colors. This is something I must remember when painting snow scenes.

I have been enjoying browsing around your blog...such beautiful colors, reflections and brush strokes in your paintings!

Love the brushstrokes and all the reflected colour in the snow along the sidewalk. Inspiring!

Thanks for your comments everyone. Carol, it is so true about snow color. It definitely takes on the colors of its surroundings. I have been "squinting" at the snow (outside) so much, and its amazing how much color it has!

Ah, I see the storm has passed! You've done such a great job of showing how the atmosphere can change so suddenly after a storm. The sunshine give this a happy, warm feeling. Beautifully painted! Really love the treatment of the snow in the tree branches.
