Race Ready

8x10 oil on board Sold
This is "Owl" our 30 foot sailboat. Owl was built in the early 1980's, one of a series of boats built for racing. She was made to go fast. We sometimes race on the bay in Hamilton with varying results. I called the painting "Race Ready" because Owl is always ready. Her crew often is not.

what an inviting composition--is it from knowing your subject so well that it just takes you in? The perspective, modeling and application on Owl are rendered so beautifully! I really like the diversity in this re colour and brushwork and Owl does look like she's ready to be 'unfettered' at any minute!

Very inviting scene on a hot summer day! Love the value and temperature shifts. Say hello to Owl for me. What a refreshing and beautiful painting.

Thank you everyone for all of the comments. And Jan, yes I think knowing a subject well makes a big difference in how it can be portrayed and shared with the viewer.

I am really enjoying these nautical paintings! The variety of blues in this one keep the eye moving but are calming and cohesive at the same time. The lines of the boat are painted so well...not an easy task at this angle.

You own this beauty? She looks like she's large enough for a Galley and a bed. Lucky girl!

Ontario has so many beautiful lakes! Lucky you to own such a lovely boat. Do you do any painting on your boat?

Thanks for your comments! Gwen, there are some berths on the boat for sleeping, but she doesn't have much of a galley. Good enough for making coffee though!
Hi Kim..I am just putting together a small painting kit and sketchbook so that I can do some.

Wow, great slick boat! She looks like she can fly like the wind. We had a 30Ft. Hunter, but she was rigged for ocean sailing.

This is great, Catherine. The variation in the whites gives a wonderful effect and the drawing element is spot on. Good stuff!
