The El Mocambo, Toronto

16x16 oil on board
This is one of Toronto's oldest music venues, first opening in the 1800's. Probably one of the most well known venues as well.
I'm still experimenting with a limited palette to create harmony and atmosphere, using Ivory black, viridian, cadmium red, yellow ochre, and ultramarine blue.
The El Mocambo is on Spadina near College.

Hi Catherine,

Great painting. I've listened to some super bands here.

I have some great memories of the "Elmo". I love the limited palette, it really is amazing what can be done with half a dozen pigments or less.

I have changed to a limited palette after my plein air workshop, it really makes sense to me now that I have been trying it. I won't always be so strict about it, seeing it is nice to experiment a little. But I think it keeps me in line more, a little more true to what I am seeing. It is amazing all the color you can make with just a few colors.... Nice piece, love the building!
