I do paint on a black surface sometimes - my painting you saw at Sunrise Gallery was done that way. I think it gives a painting a glow when you put the lights over that black ground. Happy painting - lets meet for a Tim Horton's sometime!Tammy Hexthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10606714882567078831noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1072572308301706875.post-34389030969971444472009-11-09T10:22:24.643-05:002009-11-09T10:22:24.643-05:00This is a great job Catherine. It came a little naturally for me, because I do use black paper sometimes for pastels. I think it does make the colors really stand out as you are painting and makes you think a little differently about how you use color.Mary Anne Caryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12495592576975127162noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1072572308301706875.post-53990800423852024332009-11-08T20:20:49.356-05:002009-11-08T20:20:49.356-05:00I have occasionally painted on black. Then I try to think in terms of painting with light. Rather than painting shadows, you are painting the light that creates the shadows. Your mother and daughter are lovely. I sketch in Starbucks quite a lot but have never tried to work one up into a painting.Sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04102492801230311641noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1072572308301706875.post-8537699171805313282009-11-08T14:53:20.185-05:002009-11-08T14:53:20.185-05:00I am amazed at the range of subjects that you do s...I am amazed at the range of subjects that you do so well. I don't paint in oils very much and have never tried painting black first but lately I have been doing most of my pastels on black paper. It seems to help make the lights bright and the darks very dark. Also, she seems to finish an area first, then go on to another area. I've always tried to work on the whole picture at once. It makes me want to start over and have another go at it.Catherine Jeffreyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05461798205529014264noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1072572308301706875.post-24475032889184911932009-11-08T12:53:27.357-05:002009-11-08T12:53:27.357-05:00Hi Catherine,

I paint sometimes on masonite coated in black gesso the surface is very slick, I use flat synthetic brushes to paint on it, bristle brushes tend to take more paint off than put on. Hope this is helpful!Diana Marshallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12193006545310900940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1072572308301706875.post-36580142678439009932009-11-08T11:46:26.886-05:002009-11-08T11:46:26.886-05:00Thanks for the positive comments Janelle and Myra....Thanks for the positive comments Janelle and Myra. I love the way the light is shimmering over the images. I also love what seems to be complementary violet tones. I love the bright light shining through the window, the casual poses and the shadows. Wonderful, Catherine!Janelle Goodwinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00421704740728568653noreply@blogger.com
